Every since the Dutch first settled Manhattan in 1624 pub cultural had been a major part of New York City life. The Dutch and English used pubs not just for drinking and socializing, but for business and political meetings as well. Even the English Governor of New York, Francis Lovelace used his Lovelace Tavern as the temporary City Hall in New York. During the 19th century some of New York's most famed Taverns became the hangout for some of Americas greatest literary figures. O'Henry, Dylan Thomas, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac, and Eugene O'Neill spent time writing and commiserating at New York's local haunts. Even Abe Lincoln stopped for a beer in New York when he was seeking his nomination for the presidency.
Pub life is still thriving in New York City. It is said that the Dutch colony in Manhattan had one pub for very twenty people and that ratio is still close to being the same today, On this tour we will go to some of New York's oldest pubs and drink, share stories, get to know each other, talk about New York's history and try and conjure up some of the ghosts of New York's past. Bars include: White Horse Tavern, The Ear Inn and McSorley's Pub. |
